Yamunotri is the adobe of Goddess Yamuna. Its also the source of river Yamuna. Goddess Yamuna is the sister of Yama, the goddess of death. Devotees visit the temple and take a holy dip in the Surya Kund to absolve their sins and save themselves from untimely or tragic deaths.
Places to visit in Yamunotri – Guide
- Yamunotri Temple: It is the main thing of the site. It is a part of the chardham circuit of Uttrakhand. Devotees seek blessings at the temple as the Goddess Yamuna is also the daughter of Sun ( Surya ) and ask for good health in this lifetime.
- Surya Kund: its a hot sulphur spring having medicinal values. The water here is beleived to cure long term deseases of people who take a dip in it, especially the skin diseases.
- Saptarishi Kund: This Kund is the origin of Yamuna River. This kund offers beautiful views of the blue waters. Before you visit the Saptarishi kund, its recommended to stay at Yamunotri for one day to get adjusted to the weather there
- Divya Shilla: Its a rock like structure where you pray before entring the Yamunotri
- Hanumaan Chatti: This place is located about 13 kms from Yamunotri. This place gives a beautiful view of the confluence of Hanuman Ganga and Yamuna rivers.
- Kharsali: Its a small village near Yamunotri where Goddess Yamuna resides during the winter season. With proper rituals, the Goddess Yamuna is brought down from the Yamunotri temple to Kharsali for the winters as the Yamunotri temples gets under heavy snow during the winters. Kharsali is extremely beautful and is also the starting point of the trek to Yamunotri Temple.
- Barkot: Its a beautiful town situated on the banks of river Yamuna. Its a beautiful place for people who love nature and want to enjoy slow mountain mornings and days. This is usually a point of stay for pilgrims visiting the Yamunotri Temple.
