Gangotri is the adobe of Goddess Ganga. It is the place from the holy Ganga originates from the Gaumukh glacier as the Bhagirathi river. The Bhagirathi river meets the Alaknanda river in Devprayag from where it continues as the river Ganga.
Things to do in Gangotri – Guide
- Gangotri Temple: The temple is a part of the Char Dham circuit of Uttrakhand ( Yamunotri – Gangotri – Kedarnath – Badrinath ). Its an important place for Hindu pilgrims. The temple is beautifully surrounded by the snow covered mountains.
- Gaumukh: Its the glacier from where the Bhagirathi river originates. You need to trek upto this place to see this natural wonder, for which you obviously need to more time than the pilgrims who have come just to visit the temple.
- Vishwanath Temple: This is a unique Shiva temple located in Uttarkashi as it has its mention in the Skanda Puran.
- Harshil: Its an extremely beautiful village that come on the way to the Gangotri Temple. This place is totally out of a painting with fresh blue waters flowing amidst the mountains. The village feels like heaven on earth with waterfalls, river and mountains in their undisturbed form. People stay here for one night sometimes, but the no of stay options here are limited because of the wheather and small space conditions.
- Tapovan: It is situated above Gaumukh. It is a beautiful place surrounded by mighty mountains, shivling and Meru. You can reach here only trekking all the way uphill to this place. But this trek is once in a lifetime kind of thinh which you will remember forever.
- Bhairon Ghati: Its a beautiful meadow surrounded by lush dense forests. This plcae is also for the adventure lovers who love to see the nature in its most raw form. Its about 10 kms from Uttarkashi
